We used to have this problem in Wordpress development land, where all Wordpress sites looked more or less the same, taking the idea of variations on a theme pretty literally. And don't be mistaken: I built truckloads of Wordpress sites, and they looked great, and clients loved them, and all was right with the world. Except for the fact that everybody's site looked so... templated. Not ugly, but not gorgeous.
In essence, we were totally free to do whatever we wanted, so long as we didn't actually reveal a single thing about the thing we were trying to promote...
